Local law enforcement agencies will conduct a sobriety checkpoint Friday evening through Saturday morning. The sobriety checkpoint is a public safety collaboration involving the Wichita Police Department, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol.
The checkpoint will be held on Kellogg / U.S. 54 in Wichita, Kansas. Officers will briefly stop motorist to check their driver’s license and registration. Motorists who appear impaired will be held for further evaluation.
“Traffic safety is a priority throughout our community for the Wichita Police Department,” Wichita Police Chief Norman Williams said. “The DUI Check point will allow the participating agencies to remove drunk and impaired drivers from our streets.”
Sobriety checkpoints are routinely utilized throughout the State in order to deter and detect impaired driving. So far this year, Wichita has experienced 24 traffic fatalities this year including 15 that involved alcohol. Kansas law enforcement officials strongly encourage motorists to utilize designated drivers or driving services if they have been drinking alcohol.
Motorists are also encouraged to buckle up and set distractions aside while operating automobiles.
