PRESS RELEASE
(August 10, 2010 - Albany) – New York State Police Traffic Services has recently received numerous inquiries regarding the legality of trailer hitch receiver use when not actually towing anything.
Despite persistent rumors, it is not illegal to leave the trailer hitch ball mount in the receiver on the vehicle when not towing.
State Police also remind motorists when towing a trailer behind a motor vehicle upon the public highways of the state to only use only devices approved by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles.
