Nebraska State Patrol Increases Patrols Over Busy July 4th Holiday Weekend

(Lincoln, NE)-  Motorists traveling Nebraska roadways can expect to see a strong Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) presence over the Independence Day weekend.

Beginning on Friday, July 2, through Sunday, July 4, 2010, the equivalent of 40 extra troopers will be on the road, thanks in part to a $24,000 grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety (NOHS).

Troopers will be assisted by NSP Communications Specialists who will also be putting in overtime hours during the July 4th holiday enforcement period.

Two vehicle checks will also be conducted in conjunction with the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The time and location of the vehicle checks should not be released to the public. On Wednesday, June 30, 2010, from 1:00-to- 3:00 pm and on Saturday, July 3, 2010, from 1:00-to-3:00 pm vehicle checks will be conducted on Highway 136, east of the city of Auburn in Nemaha County.

Media is welcome to cover vehicle checks. Stories on checks should not be broadcast until each individual vehicle check is completed.

Special enforcement efforts will focus on enforcing safe driving practices with an emphasis on crash causing behaviors such as speeding, following too closely, impaired and distracted driving.

In addition, motorist assist volunteers in specially marked vans will be available to help stranded motorists along Interstate 80 from Kearney, Nebraska to Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Travelers are reminded if they experience a roadside emergency or observe an impaired or reckless driver to call the Nebraska State Patrol Highway Helpline when safe to do so at *55 from any cellular phone, or 1-800-525-5555 from any landline.
