Six San Francisco police motorcycle officers will hit the streets in search of impaired drivers at 7 p.m. Friday, May 28, to kick off the Memorial Day weekend. They will return to the police station at about 3 a.m.
A sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint is set for the same night.
“We are much more mobile than a police car and have a wider arc of vision,” said Sgt. Neil Swendsen of SFPD’s Traffic Company, who will command the team. “We can see a car weaving all over the road and more easily go out after it.”
Funding for Avoid the 8 was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
