Fifteen Die on Kentucky Roadways Last Week (01/11 – 01/17)

A staged photo of a Trooper at a grave yard(Frankfort, Ky.) — Preliminary statistics* indicate that fifteen people died in fifteen separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, January 11 through Sunday, January 17, 2010.
Thirteen of the crashes involved motor vehicles and seven of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Anderson, Bullitt, Campbell, Carter, Christian, Clay (2), Laurel (2), Leslie, Warren, Whitley and Woodford counties. The crashes in Christian, Clay and Warren counties involved the suspected use of alcohol.
Two pedestrian involved fatalities occurred in Hardin and Jefferson counties.
Through January 17, preliminary statistics* indicate that 34 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2010. This is 1 less fatality than reported for the same time period in 2009. There were 29 motor vehicle fatalities and 19 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Five pedestrians have been killed. One crash involved a commercial motor vehicle. A total of 7 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
