Location: Juneau

Case Number: 10-1283

Type: Stranded Hikers – Suspected

Text: On 1-5-10, at about 2100, Juneau AST received a report about two
hikers who appeared to be stranded on Thunder Mountain. AST responded to
a Trafalgar Street residence where two headlamps could be observed in
the area near the Steep Creek drainage at about the 1500 foot level.
Several members of the Juneau Mountain Rescue group responded to the
call out as well. In viewing the actions of the two climbers it appeared
that they were somewhat confused about their situation. At about 2230,
JMR got a verbal response from the hikers that they were OK and they
could be observed slowly working their way towards the top of the
mountain.

Hikers and outdoorsman are encouraged to file some sort of trip plan
with either local law enforcement or a trusted friend or family member
when venturing into the back country. When participating in less than
ordinary activities (such as night climbing) in areas viewable to the
general public it is also encouraged to have a means to communicate with
emergency responders so as to avoid unnecessary search and rescue
efforts.
