Update on the progress of the Kay Mortensen Murder Investigation.
Utah County Sheriff’s Office Investigators are still aggressively investigating the murder of Utah County resident Kay Mortensen. Until now, the Sheriff’s Office has been reluctant to release much information regarding the case out of concern that the integrity of the evidence that has been gathered might be compromised.
Since Mr. Mortensen’s death, detectives have interviewed and scrutinized the activities of several persons of interest and will continue to investigate some of them due to troubling inconsistencies in their statements.
Detectives have also collected relevant DNA samples and blood evidence from individuals and locations via search warrants. These items of DNA evidence have been submitted to the Utah State Crime Lab for analysis and comparison and we expect the results of that forensic analysis to be complete within the next few weeks.
As noted earlier, the Utah County Sheriff’s Office is still actively investigating this murder. We are pursuing all leads that we receive and will continue to do so. The Mortensen family is still offering a reward of $25,000 for information that ultimately leads to the identification, arrest and conviction of the individual(s) responsible for killing Kay Mortensen.
We believe that this was a very personal and select act; not a random act of violence. The Utah County Sheriff’s Office is committed to bringing the responsible parties to justice and will not cease our efforts toward that end.
We ask that anyone with relevant information regarding this case contact the Utah County Sheriff’s Office at (801)851-4010 to report it to investigators.
For any questions or clarification, please contact Lt. Yvette M. Rice, Public Information Officer for the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, at (office)801-851-4331 (cell) 801-420-3745.
