A 58 year-old Kent resident was struck and killed by a motorist while attempting to run across State Route 515, also known as the Benson Highway in Kent.
At 5:50 p.m. Washington State Patrol Troopers and members of the Kent Fire Department were dispatched to the scene of a one car versus pedestrian collision on the Benson Highway at 220th Place SE. When they arrived they observed Maximiliano Diaz-Salazar lying unconscious in the left northbound lane. Diaz-Salazar was pronounced deceased at the scene.
After a thorough investigation it is determined that Diaz-Salazar was not in a crosswalk as he was attempting to cross the 5 lane Benson Highway from the west to the east. Diaz-Salazar attempted to cross after a large SUV had passed him in lane 1, and was hit by a Toyota pickup in lane 2.
The investigation determined that road and weather conditions were not factors in the collision. Troopers investigated the driver of the Toyota and determined that alcohol and/or drugs were not a factor.
The Washington State Patrol would like to remind pedestrians to use crosswalks and other designated pedestrian crossings when attempting to cross a roadway.
The northbound lanes of the Benson Highway were closed for approximately 1 ½ hours while troopers investigated the incident.
