Tampa, FL November 25, 2009 -
Tampa Police Detectives are searching for a possible witness to the University of Tampa student Hit and Run. Witnesses at the scene told detectives that they saw a small, black tow truck with yellow lettering on the side chasing the suspect after the suspect hit Erik Nicoletti and Cree Riley. The tow truck driver did not return to the scene and detectives haven’t been able to locate the driver.
LOCATION: Kennedy and N. Boulevard
VICTIM: Nicoletti, Erik V., W/M, 8/3/89 (U.T. Student)
VICTIM: Riley, Cree A., W/F, 3/6/1990
SUSPECT: Trujillo, Andres, H/M, 1/15/82 6420 Coolidge Ave. Tampa
VEHICLE: 1993 Chrysler New Yorker, beige
DETAILS: On 11/21/09 at approximately 1:13 a.m. the suspect was driving his beige 1993 Chrysler New Yorker west on Kennedy at N. Boulevard. Trujillo said that he dropped a cigarette and reached down to pick it up while he was driving. At that time, Trujillo struck Erik Nicoletti and Cree Riley who were crossing the street just west of Boulevard. Trujillio said that he realized that he hit something but thought that it was a small vehicle or motorcycle.
Nicoletti and Riley were taken to Tampa General Hospital. Erik Nicoletti later died as a result of the injuries. A short time later, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Deputies discovered an abandoned beige 1993 Chrysler New Yorker in a ditch on North Dale Mabry and Lambright. The vehicle had front-end damage and a broken, caved-in windshield. There was blood and hair on the exterior front end of the vehicle.
HCSO notified Tampa Police of their discovery and detectives impounded the vehicle as evidence. Following leads from the registration information, the detectives met and spoke with Trujilo’s family members, but they couldn’t locate him. They left their contact information with the family members.
After pressure from family members, Trujillo contacted the detectives and turned himself in. During a post Miranda interview, Trujillo confessed to the Hit & Run. He said that he was not drunk, he just panicked. Trujillo was taken to Orient Road Jail.
