DUI Holiday Mobilization

Holiday Season Mobilization – Law Enforcement

Sobriety Checkpoints Planned

San Diego, CA – Law enforcement throughout the county will be conducting DUI checkpoints and sending out a message to holiday travelers: drunk driving will not be tolerated. If you drive drunk, we will be looking for you. If we find you and a test shows you are over the legal limit – you will be arrested.

The San Diego Police Department will be staffing a DUI checkpoint as well as saturation patrols in San Diego this weekend targeting those who don’t designate a sober driver before the celebrations begin. Funding for this campaign is through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Driving under the influence (DUI) continues to be a major problem for California. Last Year, 214,811 people were arrested statewide for DUI. According to the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) there were 65,929 fatal and injury collisions in California in 2008. Among those 9,568 were alcohol-involved collisions.

“Police, Sheriff and CHP officers are doing more with less to remove drunk drivers from California’s streets and highways,” said Chris Murphy, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety. “Law enforcement everywhere is asking for the community’s help; if you see a drunk driver – Call 9-1-1.”

The enforcement campaign begins Friday night with a DUI checkpoint in the city of San Diego with more checkpoints to come. Additional DUI crackdowns are planned during the Winter Holiday DUI Mobilization effort which will take place mid-December through the New Year’s weekend.
