DUI Checkpoints & Crime on the Road, Sobriety Checkpoints

A preliminary investigation by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office into the homicide of 69-year-old Carolyn Provencal yesterday in the parking lot of the Robert L. Anderson County Administration Center indicates she was shot by her estranged husband, 69-year-old Alan Provencal.

The suspect fired five shots, striking the victim twice, causing fatal injuries.

The investigation is continuing in conjunction with the Medical Examiner’s Office. As of this time the murder weapon (a Glock .45 caliber handgun) has not been recovered, but the search continues.

The officer-involved shooting at 4211 South Salford Boulevard in North Port is being investigated by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. The initial investigation indicates the suspect raised his .25 caliber IntraTech handgun at two officers on the scene.

Officer William Carter, who was standing behind the suspect, fired three rounds from his department-issued M4 as he observed the suspect raising his weapon toward the two other officers on the scene. Two shots struck the suspect.

The Sheriff’s Office is working with the State Attorney’s Office and the Medical Examiner’s Office regarding the justified use of deadly force. The North Port Police Department will conduct an administrative review of the incident.
