The Long Beach Police Department is committed to making our streets safer this holiday season as well as through 2010.  Increased DUI enforcement combined with high visibility intersection and red-light enforcement, are designed to make our streets safer for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists.  The additional safety measures are on tap this holiday season and throughout the next year as a result of a recent $376,000 grant awarded by the Office of Traffic Safety to the Long Beach Police Department. The Long Beach Police Department is dedicated to keeping our roadways safe through both enforcement and education.

“This new grant will give the Long Beach Police Department additional resources to hold the people accountable who drive while impaired or with disregard for the rules of the road,” said Commander Gary Morrison.

The special grant is to assist in efforts to deal with increased impaired driving problems and reduce the number of persons killed and injured in intersection collisions. The grant activities will include targeting DUI offenders, drivers with suspended or revoked licenses, intersection / red-light violations and motorcycle related offenses. This will be done through the use of checkpoints, saturation patrols and specialized operations. Checkpoints have been shown to significantly reduce DUI fatalities when utilized aggressively and consistently. The most positive aspects of DUI checkpoints are their ability to increase public awareness, to prevent impaired driving in the first place, and to encourage designating a sober driver.

“When more people drive sober and safely, lives are saved.  It’s just that simple,” said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the Office of Traffic Safety.  “This grant will help make Long Beach just that much safer of a place to live and work.” Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  For any questions contact Sergeant Tom Marcoux at (562) 570-7295.
