Disabled Long Eddy man found safe in car off State Route 97
Narrowsburg NY – November 6, 2009
At about 5:40 PM on November 6, 2009, State Police in Narrowsburg responded to the scene of a one car motor vehicle accident off of State Route 97 in the Town of Freemont. Upon arrival, Troopers found the driver, 28 year old Christopher Drake of Long Eddy, NY, in his 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt approximately thirty feet down an earth embankment off the road. Drake, who is paralyzed, was not injured as a result of the accident.
Drake stated on Thursday, November 5th at about 11:00 AM, he was northbound on State Route 97 and went off the west shoulder of the road after reaching for an object that fell off the seat next to him. The vehicle came to rest 30 feet down an earth embankment, and was not visible to passenger vehicles up on the road.
Drake could not reach the road and spent the overnight in his vehicle with his hazard lights on.
Sullivan County 911 Center received the call at 5:40 PM on Friday from a school bus employee from First Student bus company, after a fourteen year old student advised her that he saw a vehicle down an embankment off of State Route 97. The student reportedly saw the vehicle while he was riding on the school bus home from school on Friday.
Callicoon and Hankins Fire Departments assisted Troopers and family members in bringing the driver up from the embankment to safety. Upper Delaware Ambulance transported Drake to Catskill Regional Medical Center to be treated for exposure, where he is recovering.
