Baton Rouge, LA – Louisiana State Fire Marshal H. “Butch” Browning announced today that Michael J. Miller W/M, dob. 8-25-1946 died in an early morning fire on 11-7-09, at 01:54hrs. The fire occurred in a permanently set up 35 foot fifth wheel recreational camper located at 44299 Erwin Villar Jr. Road in Prairieville.

The Galvaz-Lake VFD, Seventh District VFD and St. Amant VFD responded to the fire and upon their arrival, the fire was completely consuming the camper and threaten a nearby residential structure. They located the body of Mr. Miller and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Fire Marshal Browning commended the quick actions to attempt to save Mr. Miller. He stated, “Firefighters gave their all to make a difference unfortunately, this death occurred well before their arrival as this fire was burning, undetected, for a long time”. The camper had no working smoke detector, “I ask that every family, right now, take the time to test your smoke detector, if the battery is dead replace it! If you don’t have one, get one right now! If you go to bed tonight and there is a fire, you will probably not survive with out a working smoke detector”, the Fire Marshal stated.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is working with the Ascension Parish Sheriff and the Ascension Coroner to determine the cause of this fatal and tragic fire. At this time, we feel the fire is accidental in nature and the investigation centers around some electrical and heating causes. The Fire Marshal’s Arson K-9 was used and ruled out the presence of flammable liquids as a cause of the fire. “We will be awaiting results of an autopsy as well as other evidence collected by the Sheriff, as later this week we complete our investigation”, Says Marshal Browning.

Fire Marshal Browning Stated, “We extend our deepest symphony to Mr. Millers family and friends and pledge our full efforts to best determine the reason why this fire occurred and to take steps to prevent others in the future”.
