New York – Newark Valley Pastor Arrested For Embezzlement

(Owego, NY – November 5, 2009) The New York State Police in Owego arrested David L. Heckman Jr., DOB – 06/10/82 of 37 Court Street,  Apartment 4E, Binghamton, New York, for Grand Larceny 2nd Degree following an investigation into the theft of funds from the bank account of the Tioga County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, Newark Valley, N.Y. Inclusive in this theft is the misappropriation of cash mortgage payments paid directly to Heckman from homeowners who reside in Habitat of Humanity built residences. Heckman has been charged with stealing monies in excess of $50,000.00.

Heckman was arraigned in the Town of Owego Justice Court and remanded to the Tioga County Jail in lieu of $50,000.00 cash or $100,000.00 property bond.

This arrest follows the November 1st, 2009 arrest of David L. Heckman for Grand Larceny 4th Degree after he made unauthorized purchases in excess of $1,500.00 that were charged to First Congregational United Church of Christ, Newark Valley, N.Y.

Heckman was pastor of the Church as well as a member of the board of directors and treasurer of the Tioga County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity when these incidents occurred. Heckman is currently on leave of absence from the Church and has been replaced as treasurer for Habitat for Humanity.

The New York State Police were assisted by the Tioga County District Attorney’s Office, the First Congregational United Church of Christ and the Tioga County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
