Tampa, FL November 3, 2009 -
DATE: 11/3/2009 8:09 AM
LOCATION: 2609 N. Armenia Ave
INVOLVED OFFICER: 47-year old Steve Letteri – 21 year veteran
VICTIM: HCSO Deputy J. Brock – 19-year veteran
DETAILS: Officer S. Letteri was dispatched to the location in reference to loose, aggressive dogs in the area. The caller said the dogs attacked a man walking to work and chased kids walking to school. The man jumped onto the hood of a vehicle with one of the dogs biting his pant leg. He was not injured. When the officer arrived, he found the dogs on the front porch of 2605 N. Armenia, but remained in his police car for safety. Moments later, Deputy J. Brock pulled up behind Officer Letteri’s vehicle with the intent of serving an eviction notice. The deputy approached Letteri’s car on foot. The dogs immediately charged the deputy and one of the dogs started biting him on the right leg. The deputy attempted to climb a fence to get away from the dogs, but one latched onto his leg and would not let go. Officer Letteri then shot the dog. The dog turned and charged Officer Letteri’s vehicle. He fired another shot and killed the dog. Deputy Brock was there to serve an eviction notice at 2605 N. Armenia. Deputy Brock received puncture wounds to the right leg and was treated on scene and also responded to University Community Hospital for follow-up treatment.
Animal Control responded and took custody of the dead dog and the second dog, which returned to the scene during the investigation.
Although the dogs chased other people, Deputy Brock is the only person known at this time, to have been bit. The dogs belonged to the person(s) who moved out of 2605 N. Armenia just prior to being served the eviction notice and apparently abandoned the dogs when he moved. Officers are still working to locate the dogs’ owner who will face criminal charges.
