The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department’s Traffic Services Detail, conducted a D.U.I. checkpoint Friday night in Newhall.  The checkpoint, which began at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 09, 2009, and concluded at 3:00 a.m. Saturday morning, October 10, 2009, was conducted on Newhall Avenue at Valle Del Oro.

The goal of the checkpoint was to educate the community on the hazards of drunk driving while enforcing the D.U.I. laws of the State of California. The checkpoints are an ongoing attempt to safely remove drunk drivers from our streets and deter those who may be considering drinking and driving.

A total of 1,906 vehicles passed through the checkpoint and 1,604 were screened.  Two drivers were arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and a third driver was arrested for felony drug possession.  Seven citations were issued for California Vehicle Code violations and 4 vehicles were impounded.

Funding for this enforcement and prevention program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.
