Don’t get cuffed and stuffed. The La Quinta Police Department will conduct a sobriety and safety checkpoint during the Labor Day weekend. The checkpoint operation will begin Sunday, September 6, 2009, at 8:00 PM., and continue until Monday, September 7, 2009 at 3:00 AM.
The checkpoint will be held in the eastbound lanes of Highway 111, east of Adams Street. To shorten the screening delay, motorists are encouraged to have their driver’s license, vehicle insurance and registration information readily available as they drive through the checkpoint. All vehicles will be screened by officers who are trained to detect the signs and symptoms of intoxication. Any drivers found violating California’s sobriety or licensing laws will be arrested.
Checkpoint operations in the city of La Quinta focus on educating motorists about the danger of impaired driving, demonstrate a commitment to reducing safety hazards within the communities, and encourage the designation of a sober driver.
In addition to the checkpoint operation, La Quinta Traffic Services will concurrently patrol various streets within La Quinta looking for impaired drivers and safety violations.
“La Quinta Police Traffic Services has a fundamental mission. We provide quality service, education, and driver accountability to safeguard the residents and visitors who travel upon our streets. While working to achieve our objectives, we hope to shield citizens against the terrible cost some pay by losing their lives during collisions caused by drunk and unlicensed drivers.” – Sergeant David Walton, La Quinta Traffic Services
This safety checkpoint and proactive DUI patrols are being funded through a grant awarded to the La Quinta Police Department by the California Office of Traffic Safety. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspected drunk drivers by calling 9-1-1.
