DUI Results for First Week of National DUI Crackdown

Dover – Delaware law enforcement officer arrested 17 individuals for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) of alcohol and/or drugs during the first weekend of the National DUI Crackdown Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest. 10 of the arrests came as a result of sobriety checkpoints conducted August 21st and 22nd, while the remaining 7 DUI arrests resulted from DUI saturation patrols statewide. Agencies conducting checkpoints included the New Castle County DUI Task Force (Newark) and Laurel Police (on Alt. Rt. 13).

In addition to the 17 DUI arrests, officers issued a total of 8 citations for underage drinking, apprehended 9 wanted individuals, made 13 drug arrests, 7 felony arrests, seized 1 weapon, issued 17 seat belt citations, and 195 citations for various other traffic violations.

The National Impaired Driving Crackdown began August 21st and runs through September 7th. Delaware is participating through a combination of awareness and stepped up enforcement efforts. For the kick off weekend (Aug. 28th & 29th) six sobriety checkpoints and another 90 DUI saturation patrols are scheduled to occur. The checkpoints are scheduled for:

Friday August 28th – Wilmington (NcCo DUI Task Force)

Dover (DSP Troop 3)

Rehoboth Beach (Rehoboth Beach PD)

Saturday August 29th – Newark (DSP Troop 9)

Millsboro (Millsboro PD)

Harrington (Harrington PD)

Checkpoints that are scheduled during the National DUI Crackdown are also a component of Delaware’s Checkpoint Strikeforce campaign. Checkpoint Strikeforce is a regional sobriety checkpoint campaign aimed at arresting DUI offenders, and using high visibility

enforcement to deter those who would otherwise choose to drink and drive. The campaign, a six month long effort running through New Year’s Eve, involves setting up weekly DUI checkpoints statewide.
