Seafair B.U.I. Emphasis Media Event Scheduled

The Washington State Patrol’s Impaired Driving Section has organized the 2009 Boating Under the Influence (BUI) emphasis on Lake Washington for this year’s Seafair celebration. At 11:00a.m. Friday, July 31st, WSP’s Impaired Driving Section will be hosting a media event at Proctor Landing on Mercer Island (3200 60th Ave SE) to kick off the largest and most successful BUI emphasis in the state.

The WSP is partnering with Mercer Island Police Department’s marine unit, the Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the King County Prosecutors Office to make this year’s Seafair celebrations a fun and safe environment for all boaters on Lake Washington. During the event Trooper Steve Luce from the Impaired Driving Section will provide a tour of the facilities which will include video and photo opportunities of a temporary eighty foot dock, several large fenced detention facilities, a processing station, and the Mobile Impaired Driving Unit (MIDU). The MIDU is a mobile command center equipped with 4 breathalyzer machines, 2 holding cells, 3 computer work stations, and also serves as the emphasis main communication hub.

Since 2004 WSP has partnered with local, state, and federal agencies to conduct the Seafair BUI emphasis. Since 2004 the emphasis has been extremely successful and resulted in 418 BUI arrests and numerous other miscellaneous criminal arrests. Last year alone the emphasis accounted for 413 vessel contacts which resulted in 83 B.U.I arrests, 21 minor in possession of alcohol arrests, and 7 other criminal arrests. More importantly, each year the emphasis has taken place there have been fewer injury boat collisions on Lake Washington during the Seafair festivities. Last year there was only 1 injury boat collision during the entire Seafair weekend.

Due to limited parking in the command post area, interview and video opportunities will only be available on Friday, July 31st at 11:00am. Media personnel are invited to participate in a vessel ride along with trooper by appointment only. To make a ride along appointment, please contact Trooper Steve Luce at (206) 498-6477.
