Idaho – Radioactive Waste Shipments to Close Highways Temporarily Between Idaho Falls and Arco

RIGBY – The Idaho Transportation Department advises that shipments of radioactive waste from the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) will close highways temporarily between Idaho Falls and Arco, starting Thursday (July 30).
Crews will close the highways up to one hour between 3 and 4 a.m. each Thursday during the next 10 weeks. INL officials expect the final convoy of trucks transferring radioactive waste to roll on Oct. 1.
Shipments will close U.S. 20 from the entrance of the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) west of Idaho Falls, U.S. 26 from one mile south of its junction with U.S. 20 south of INL and U.S. 20-26 from the INL access road north of the Big Lost River Rest Area east of Arco.
Motorists should avoid these highways during the Thursday closure hour.
Idaho Cleanup Project contractor CH2M-WG Idaho will ship the radioactive waste in specially designed containers to the Idaho Nuclear Technology and Engineering Complex at INL for repackaging and shipment out of Idaho.
CH2M-WG Idaho will transport the waste to the federal Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico starting next year, using funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
