As the train approached the engineer blew the train’s horn and placed the train into an emergency stop. The conductor advised that the man looked up at the train and then laid back down, making no attempt to get off the tracks. The train’s lead engine stopped just south of Bayou Liberty Road and had the intersections of bayou Liberty, Fremaux and Pennsylvanian Avenue blocked until 6:30 am. Due to the early morning hour there was no reported traffic problems associated with the investigation.
Investigators learned that Burnett was living on his sailboat in the Slidell area and had been in the Olde Towne area earlier in the night. Investigators do not know why Burnett was on the tracks or why he did not get off when the train approached.
