On Saturday morning at 3:40 am Slidell Police were notified by Norfork Southern Railroad that a train passing through Slidell near the intersection of Front Street and Robert had hit a pedestrian.

Officers soon discovered the body of a 54 year old Mississippi man under the train.  It appeared that the man was run over by the train and died of multiple traumatic injuries.  Officers also discovered the man’s wallet under the train just yards from him body, which identified him as Raymond L. Burnett III age 54 from Madison, MS.

The train’s conductor advised that they saw the man lying across the tracks with his hands behind his head.  As the train approached the engineer blew the train’s horn and placed the train into an emergency stop.  The conductor advised that the man looked up at the train and then laid back down, making no attempt to get off the tracks.   The train’s lead engine stopped just south of Bayou Liberty Road and had the intersections of bayou Liberty, Fremaux and Pennsylvanian Avenue blocked until 6:30 am.  Due to the early morning hour there was no reported traffic problems associated with the investigation.

Investigators learned that Burnett was living on his sailboat in the Slidell area and had been in the Olde Towne area earlier in the night.  Investigators do not know why Burnett was on the tracks or why he did not get off when the train approached.
