Troopers Seek Drivers Who May Have Seen Dark Blue Van

The Massachusetts State Police are requesting the public’s assistance as they continue to investigate Friday’s fatal crash on Route 93 southbound in Andover.

State Police are asking anyone who may have observed an older-model dark blue passenger van on Route 93 southbound around 4:45 p.m. on Friday, July 10 to contact the Andover State Police barracks at (978) 475-3800. State Police are working to determine whether the van contributed to the sequence of events leading to the crash.

The roll-over crash, which occurred at about 4:45 p.m. north of Exit 45 (River Road), resulted in the death of a passenger, 23-year-old Mark R. Ecker II of East Longmeadow. Ecker, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the 1996 Pontiac Sunfire coupe that rolled over after its driver lost control. Ecker was taken by ambulance with serious injuries to Lawrence General Hospital where he was subsequently pronounced deceased. The driver of the Sunfire, 21-year-old Stephanie Ortiz of Lawrence, was also taken by ambulance to Lawrence General Hospital with minor injuries.

Preliminary investigation by the State Police indicates that the Sunfire was travelling in the right travel lane when it lost control, exited the road to the right and rolled over.

The crash remains under investigation by Troop A of the State Police with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the Essex County District Attorney’s Office. The Andover Fire Department and the Massachusetts Highway Department assisted Troopers at the scene.

Due to the crash investigation and vehicle removal, the right travel lane and breakdown lane of Route 93 South was closed for approximately one hour.  The breakdown lane remained closed for three hours.
