DUI Checkpoints & Crime on the Road, Sobriety Checkpoints

The Palm Desert Police Department has just completed a DUI / Driver’s License Safety Checkpoint. This operation ran on July 11th, from 8:00 P.M. through 2:00 A.M. on Fred Waring Drive and Hwy 111 in the city of Palm Desert.

The primary goal of the checkpoint was to screen for those driving while intoxicated as well as unlicensed or suspended drivers. This was in response to collisions involving unlicensed, suspended and intoxicated drivers. Funding for this operation was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The grant provides funding to staff checkpoints at various times throughout the year to reduce drunk driving and apprehend drivers with suspended and/or revoked licenses.

A total of 478 cars passed through the checkpoint and 24 were screened. Of these, eight drivers were given field sobriety tests. Two drivers were arrested for driving under the influence, and one driver was arrested for driving while unlicensed or suspended. Additionally, two subjects were arrested for felony possession of drugs. Three vehicles were towed.

The Palm Desert Police Department would like to ask for the public’s help in catching intoxicated drivers by calling 911 if they see a possible impaired driver.
