Type: Suicide
Text: On 7/7/09 at 1714 hours, AST responded to a suicide in the wooded
area near the intersection of Seward Meridian and Bogard Rd near
Wasilla.  Investigation determined that James Hamilton, age 60, of
Wasilla had died of an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound.  The State
Medical Examiner’s office responded to the scene and transported the
body for further investigation.  Next of kin have been notified.
Investigation is continuing.

Case number: 09-59005
Type: Death Investigation
Text: On 7/7/09 at about, 2330 hours, AST received a report of an
expected home death at 1800 S. Inner Springer Loop near Palmer.
Investigation determined Carl Caswell, 74, of Palmer, died of natural
causes.  Next of kin was present at the time of death.  No foul play is
suspected.  Comfort One paper is on file.  SME was contacted and
released the body to family.

Type: MVA-D

Text: On 07-07-2009, at approximately 1824 hours, Alaska State Troopers
responded to the area of Bogard Rd. and Bear St. for a report of a motor
vehicle collision. Investigation revealed that Michael R. Bird, age 23,
of Wasilla was traveling East on Bogard Rd. driving a 2006 Chevy Equinox
when he collided with the rear of an eastbound 1996 Chevy Suburban
driven by Teryl M. Herter, age 27, of Wasilla. The Suburban had a
trailer with two jet skis on it.  The trailer tongue broke away from the
hitch and the two jet skis came off of the trailer when the trailer
collided with the ditch.  Total damage to both vehicles including the
jet skis was estimated at approximately $3400.00. No injuries were
reported. All occupants were wearing their safety belts.  Both vehicles
were driven from the scene.  Bird was issued a citation for negligent
driving.

Type: Burglary I, Theft II.

Text: On 07/07/09, at 1842 hours, AST responded to an address located on
Arbor Way for a reported Burglary.  Investigation revealed unknown
person(s) entered the residence sometime between 0600 and 1815 hours
through an unsecured second story window.  A handgun and several CDs
were reported stolen out of the residence.  Troopers are asking anyone
with information about the burglary to call 745-2131 or Crime Stoppers
at 745-3333.

Type: Assault 4 (DV)

Text: On 07/07/2009 at approximately 1328 hours, Alaska State Troopers
responded to a reported assault near mile 48 of the Parks Hwy. outside
Wasilla.  Investigation found that Adam J. Avakumoff, age 26, of
Wasilla, had physically assaulted an adult female.  Avakumoff was
arrested and remanded into the Mat-Su Pretrial facility on the charge of
Assault 4 (DV).  Avakumoff was held on no bail.

Type: Search and Rescue
Text: On 7-8-09, at about 1030 hours, Alaska State Troopers launched a
search and rescue mission for a John Shaubach, age 43, of Wasilla.
Shaubach was reported overdue after he failed to arrive at Burma Landing
as scheduled.  Shaubach was attempting to canoe the Little Susitna River
starting at mile 57 of the Parks Highway in Houston and ending at Burma
Landing.  At 1219 hours, Alaska State Troopers launched an aircraft from
Wasilla searching the Little Susitna River.  At about 1240 hours,
Shaubach was located approximately 2.5 miles north of Burma Landing.
Shaubach was found to be okay, but had misjudged his arrival time.

Type: Death Investigation – Natural Causes
Text: On 7-8-2009 at approximately 0927 hours, AST responded to a
residence on White Birch Drive in Wasilla, for a report of a deceased
male inside his residence.  Investigation revealed that Arnold G. Link
Jr., age 55 of Wasilla, died of natural causes.  The SME was contacted
and released the body to Valley Funeral Home in Wasilla.  Next of kin
was notified, and no foul play is suspected.

Type: NVOL

Text: On 7/8/09 at 1450 hours, Alaska State Troopers stopped a 1993
Cadillac on Bogard Rd. near Grayling St. in Palmer for expired
registration.  Investigation revealed the operator of the vehicle,
Cassie Refour, age 22 of Wasilla was operating the vehicle with No Valid
Operator’s License.  Refour was issued a summons on scene for a later
court date and the vehicle was released to a valid operator.

Case number: 09-58716

Type: Harassment first Degree, two counts Disorderly Conduct

Text: On 07-07-09 Bethel AST received information from the Yukon
Kuskokwim Correctional Center that a defendant had sprayed a
Correctional Officer with urine. Investigation revealed that Inmate
Richard Hickman, 20 of Bethel had sprayed a Correctional Officer with
urine from a spray bottle and also sprayed two other Correctional
Officers with Ketchup. Hickman is being charged with Harassment in the
First Degree and two counts of Disorderly Conduct.

Text: On 07/01/09 at about 1330 hours, Aniak Alaska State Troopers,
arrested Paul Alexie (44 YOA), of Crooked Creek after he turned himself

as a sex offender.   Alexie was transported to YKCC and lodged.

Text: On 07/01/09 at about 1330 hours, Aniak Alaska State Troopers,
arrested William Felker (23 YOA), of Crooked Creek after he turned
himself in.  Felker had a $1500.00 outstanding warrant for D/V Assault
in the Fourth degree.    Felker was transported to YKCC and lodged.

Case number: 09-58830

Type: Motor Vehicle Crash

Text: On 7/2/09, Nome AST was advised of a single vehicle roll over in
Teller.  AST responded and it was determined that the vehicle was
traveling on a loose gravel road when a rear tire suddenly deflated
causing the vehicle to swerve off the road and roll one time.  The drive
was medivaced to Nome as a precaution.  The driver was wearing her seat
belt and alcohol is not believed to be a factor.

Location: Noatak

Case number: 09-59162

Type: Theft

Text: On 7-8-09 at approximately 1100 hours, Kotzebue Troopers received
a report of a theft in the village of Noatak.  Investigation determined
that sometime between 0300 hours and 1100 hours, an undisclosed amount
of cash was discovered missing from a shirt pocket while the shirt was
being worn by a Noatak elder.  Possible suspects have been identified.
Anyone having any knowledge to this incident is encouraged to contact
Kotzebue Troopers at 1-800-789-3222.  Alcohol was a factor during the
incident and the investigation is continuing.

Type: Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol

Text: On July 7, 2009 at 6:30pm, the Napaskiak Village Public Safety
Officer arrested 35 year old Mary Petluska of Napaskiak for operating a
4 wheeler while under the influence of alcohol.  Petluska was
transported to Bethel and charged with DUI and Misconduct Involving a
Controlled Substance.  Petluska was remanded to the Yukon-Kuskokwim
Correctional Center.

Case Number: 09-59209
Type: Assault
Text: On 7/7/09, the Chignik Lake VPSO investigated a report of an
assault.  Investigation showed that a fisherman accused another
fisherman of criminal mischief.  An argument ensued and threats were
made to one another, however no phsyical assault occurred.
Investigation is ongoing and the names of the fishermen are being
withheld until the investigation is complete.

Location: Twin Hills

Case number: 09-56566

Type: SAR

Text: On 7/1/09, at 2025 hrs, AST Dillingham received a report that a
personal emergency beacon had been activated.  The beacon signal was
coming from the vicinity of Pungokepuk Lake, located approximately
twenty miles northeast of the village of Twin Hills.  The beacon was
registered to William Calomiris, age 27, of Washington DC.  Calomiris
and Adam Grunstra, also age 27, of Bethesda, MD, had been dropped off at
the lake on 6/30/09, by a Dillingham based air taxi service with plans
to remain in the area for seven days.  RCC Anchorage was notified of the
situation and a USCG helicopter in Kodiak was placed on standby.  An AWT
float plane based in Dillingham that was in the area participating in
the Bristol Bay salmon fishery enforcement was dispatched to the area.
At 2230 hours, the AWT trooper landed on Pungokepuk Lake and contacted
Calomiris and Grunstra.  Subsequent investigation revealed that there
actually was not an emergency.  Calomiris and Grunstra claimed that the
had been sunburned.  They were unprepared to deal with the long day
length and any further exposure to the sun.  They had activated the
beacon in an effort to get extracted ahead of schedule.  A message was
relayed to the air taxi service that Calomiris and Grunstra were
requesting to be picked up early.  The trooper instructed them to
remained camped at the pickup point on the lake shore.  The trooper then
departed the area and returned to Dillingham.  The air taxi service made
arrangements to pickup Calomiris and Grustra on 7/2/09.  The USCG
helicopter was order to stand down.  Calomiris’s NOK were notified that
they were alright and that they would be return to Dillingham on 7/2/09.

Text: On 7/8/09, a Chignik Lake resident reported that someone unknown
cut the line between his skiff and anchor.  The boat did not float away.
The lost anchor was valued at under $25.00 dollars.  Investigation
continues.

Type: Sexual Assault IV

Text: On 7/04/09 at 1135 hours, the Alaska State Trooper in Dillingham
recieved a report from 48 year old Molly Gatzke that her five year old
grandson of Kokhanok had been sexually assaulted by a fifteen year old
boy in Kokhanok.  The incident is under investigation.

Type: Suicide
Text: On 7/8/09 at 1415 hours, 22 year old Dillingham resident Lydia
Kasayulie died at ANMC of a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound to
the head.  The initial shooting occurred on 7/7/08 sometime between 0800
hours and 1230 hours.  Alcohol was reported to be a factor.  The next of
kin was at ANMC at the time of death.  Investigation is on-going.

Type: Sexual Assault I

Text: On 7/04/09 at 0650 hours, the Alaska State Troopers in Dillingham
recieved a report from a 23 year old female of Nondalton that she had
been sexually assaulted by 49 year old Walter Hobson of Nondalton.
Investigation revealed that Hobson had sexually assaulted the victim.
Hobson was arrested and transported to the Dillingham Correctional
facility where he was held on a $10,000 bail.  The investigaiton is
continuing.

Type: Death Investigation
Text: On 7/8/09 at 0745 hours, a nurse practitioner at the False Pass
Clinic reported the death of 70 year old Anchorage resident Henry
Ferguson.  Ferguson had several health problems and was expected to be
flown to Anchorage via medivac for further medical attention later in
the day.  Ferguson’s son was with him at the time of his death.  No foul
play or alcohol use is suspected.  The State Medical Examiner’s Office
released the body to the family for burial.

Type: Arrest Warrant

Text: On 7-08-09 at 1000 hours, Alaska State Troopers and the Toksook
Bay Police Department arrested Rudy Lincoln 44 yoa of Toksook Bay on a
$10,000.00 warrant for two counts of Sexual Assault in the Second
Degree. Lincoln was transported back to Bethel where he was remanded at
the Yukon Kuskokwim Correctional Center.

Text:On 7/8/09 at 1600 hours, Aniak AST responded to a report of an
accident involving a 4-wheeler.  Incident to the investigation, Andrew
John Sr., 63, was arrested for DUI, DWLR, Refusal and Reckless
Endangerment as he had a passenger on the 4-wheeler at the time of the
accident.  John was transported to Bethel by state aircraft and lodged
at YKCC pending arraignments on 7/9/09.

Type: Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance 6th Degree

Text: On Tuesday, 7-7-09, at about 2035 hours, Alaska State Troopers
stopped a white 1996 Ford F150 pickup on E. Rezanof Drive for an
equipment violation.  Subsequent investigation revealed the driver 36
YOA James Hugh Smith III of Kodiak was in possession of marijuana and
related paraphernalia.  Smith was issued a uniform summons and complaint
for Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance in the Sixth Degree and
a citation for Failure to Wear Seatbelt.

Text:  On July 7, 2009, at about 1700 hours, AST responded to a motor
vehicle crash on University Avenue in Fairbanks.  Investigation revealed
that Christina Russell, 46 of Fairbanks, left the scene of a motor
vehicle crash before exchanging all required information.  Further
investigation revealed that Russell was operating a motor vehicle under
the influence of alcoholic beverages as well as while her privilege to
drive was revoked.  Russell was remanded to FCC.

Case number: 09-58813

Type: Disorderly Conduct / Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance
6th

Text: On 7/7/09 at approximately 1446 hours, Troopers observed a white
male subject lying beside the Parks Hwy at mile post 249.  AST
identified Sean Kyle Smeeden, 24 YOA of Anchorage, who was highly
intoxicated and was lying on the asphalt next to the fog line of
northbound lane.  Smeeden’s breath alcohol level was .228%.  Further
investigation revealed that Smeeden had a small amount of marijuana on
his person.  Smeeden was transported to Fairbanks Correctional Center
and held on $1,500.00 bail.  The marijuana was seized for evidence.

Type: Multiple counts – Assault 4th (DV)
Text: On 7-8-09, at approximately 0027 hours, Alaska State Troopers
received a 911 call reporting an assault in progress at a bed and
breakfast in Tok. Alaska State Troopers responded and contacted Traverse
J. Zink, age 35 of Utah. Investigation revealed that Zink became
intoxicated and assaulted several members of his family. Two members
were transported to Tok Medical Clinic for treatment; they were released
later in stable condition. Zink was arrested and transported to Tok
holding facility where he was lodged. He is charged with five counts of
domestic violence assault 4th degree.

Location: Delta Junction

Case number: 09-59161

Type: MVC-D, Drive while license suspended, Negligent driving

Text: On 7-8-09 at approximately 1219 hours, AST responded to a report
of a motor vehicle rollover located near mile 283 of the Richardson
Highway.   AST investigation determined Jose A. Cole 23, of Delta
Junction was southbound at mile 282.6 driving a 2004 Jeep Liberty when
the vehicle left the roadway.  Cole attempted to steer the vehicle back
onto the roadway but lost control.  The vehicle crossed the roadway and
rolled over in the ditch.  Cole was wearing a seat belt and was not
injured.  A records check showed Cole to have a suspended license.  Cole
was issued a summons for driving with a suspended license and also
issued a citation for negligent driving.   The vehicle was a total loss.

Type: Search and Rescue

Text: On 6/30/09 at 1645 hours, Soldotna State Trooper Dispatch received
a 911 call from Peyton Sparks 34 yoa of Seward to report that he lost
power to his boat while on the Kenai Lake and he is currently drifting
towards shore, and that he has 4 people on board. At 1708 hours, Alaska
State Troopers and Alaska Wildlife Trooper based from Cooper Landing
responded from Cooper Landing and located Sparks approximately three
miles north of the Primrose boat launch. Sparks and the other four that
were on his boat were in good health and transported by AST back to the
Primrose Campground.

Type: MIW IV, Criminal Mischief

Text: On 6/27/09 State Troopers from Cooper Landing and Crown Point
responded to the gravel pit at mile 49 of the Seward Hwy following a
report of people shooting construction equipment. Subsequently Daniel
Brooks 21 yoa, Matthew Currier 24 yoa, and Shawn Lamaster 20 yoa all of
Anchorage were charged with MIW IV and Criminal Mischief after
investigation revealed they were shooting rifles across then main
entrance into the gravel pit and for shooting a water tank sitting in
the gravel pit. The charges will be forwarded to the Kenai DA.

Location: Cooper Landing

Type: Habitual MCA

Text: 7/5/09 at 0840 hours, AST dispatch received a report of a male
passed out in the middle of Exit Glacier Road in Seward. Bear Creek
Volunteer Fire Department responded and located the male 19 year old
Logan Joseph of Cooper Landing. Joseph left the scene prior to AST
arrival and was contacted by A Cooper Landing based State Trooper at
1335 hours, in Cooper Landing. Joseph was subsequently charged with
Habitual MCA after court records revealed Joseph has two prior
conviction of MCA. Joseph was released from the scene a will appear in
the Seward Court at a later date for the charge of Habitual MCA.

Text: On 7/6/09 A Cooper Landing based State Trooper charged Brenden
Nickel  33 yoa of Sterling, with Reckless Driving after investigation
revealed he passed a  truck pulling a travel trailer on the right hand
side almost sideswiping the vehicles. Nickel will appear in the Seward
Court at a later date for the above charge.

Location: Cooper Landing

Type: Motor Vehicle Collision

Text: On 7/6/09 Alaska State Trooper from Cooper Landing and Crown Point
along with Alaska Wildlife Troopers from Cooper Landing responded to
mile 45 of the Sterling Hwy following a report of a motor vehicle
collision involving four vehicles. Investigation revealed William
Stoltenberg 21 yoa of North Pole was operating a 1998 Peterbuilt pulling
an oversize load traveling southbound on the Sterling Hwy. Stoltenberg
observed a bicyclist along the edge of the southbound ditch and moved
over to avoid hitting the bicyclist. The oversized load crossed the
center line into the northbound lane and collided with a 2007 Dodge
pulling a trailer being operated by John Johnson 63 yoa of Minnesota,
then collided with a 2001 Mitsubishi car being operated by Cera Powell
27 yoa of Oregon, then it collided with a 2008 Toyota Tundra then a 2007

old Cameron Porter of Anchorage. No injures were reported and all

Brady 47 yoa of Anchorage with Reckless Driving after AST observed Brady
cross the fog line then veer back into her lane of travel then almost

Court at a later date for the above charge.

Text: On 7/5/09 at approximately 2322 hours, Alaska State Troopers
stopped a black Jeep Cherokee for a moving violation near mile 4.0 of
Exit Glacier Road.  The driver and only occupant was identified as
Robert Worabel, age 19 of Seward, by his AKOL.  Investigation revealed
Worabel was in possession of marijuana.  Worabel was issued a citation
to appear in court and released.

Text: On 7/5/09 at approximately 0050 hours, Alaska State Troopers
contacted Chase Jenson, age 18 of Soldotna, near mile 2.0 Exit Glacier
Road.  Jenson was requested to disperse the area after a crime had
occurred.  Jenson did not disperse and was placed under arrest for
Disorderly Conduct.  Subsequent investigation revealed Jenson had
consumed alcohol.  Jenson was additionally charged with Minor Consuming.
Jenson was transported to the Seward City Jail and remanded.  Bail was
set at $500.00

Text: On 7/4/09, at 1520 hours, Troopers stopped a vehicle near mile 27
of the Seward Highway for speeding.  The driver was contacted and
identified as Mark Wright, 55 of Anchorage.  During the stop it was
determined that Wright was under the influence of alcohol and that his
driver’s license was in a revoked status.  Further investigation showed
that Wright did not have vehicle insurance and the license plates on the
vehicle did not belong to the vehicle.  Wright was arrested and
transported to the Seward Jail where he refused to provide a breath
sample.  Wright was remanded into the Seward Jail without incident.

Text: On 7/5/09 at approximately 2010 hours, Alaska State Troopers
contacted Kevin Kaiakokonok, age 47 of Seward, as he pulled into his
driveway near mile 1.0 Old Nash Road.  Kaiakokonok was identified by his
name and date of birth.  A records check revealed Kaiakokonok’s
operators license was revoked effective 4/15/09 and ending 4/14/10 for
Admin Per Se .08.  Further investigation revealed Kaiakokonok was
impaired by alcohol.  Kaiakokonok had his two children in the vehicle at
the time of the contact.  Kaiakokonok was placed under arrest,
transported to the Seward City Jail, and remanded.  Bail was set at
$2000.00.

Text: On 7/6/09 at approximately 2339 hours, Alaska State Troopers were
notified of a vehicle that was crossing the center and fog lines.  The
vehicle also had several broken windows and fresh damage.  The vehicle
stopped near mile 36.0 of the Seward Highway.  After AST arrived on
scene the driver and only occupant was identified as Elizabeth Stark,
age 52 of Anchorage.  Investigation revealed Stark was impaired by
alcohol and had earlier ran off the roadway and struck shrubbery on the
side of the highway.  Stark was placed under arrest, transported to the
Seward City Jail, and remanded.  Bail was set at $500.00.

Type: DUI, DWLR, No Motor Vehicle Insurance, Assault III
Text: On 7/4/09 at 0901 hours, Alaska State Troopers from Cooper Landing
along with Cooper Landing Emergency Services responded to 52 mile of the
Sterling Hwy following a report of a single vehicle rollover.
Investigation revealed Daniel Hughey 27 yoa of Anchorage was traveling
northbound on the Sterling Hwy in a 2002 Ford Van. Hughey was unable to
negotiate the turn and went over and embankment rolling the van twice.
Both Hughey and his passenger were not secured in there seatbelts and
were thrown thought out the vehicle. Hughey was subsequently arrested
for DUI, Driving with a Revoked Operators License and driving without
Motor Vehicle Insurance and was remanded at the Seward Jail. The
passenger in the vehicle was medivac’d to Anchorage via Life Med for
head injuries. An additional charge of Assault III will be forwarded to
the DA.
