Syracuse, New York – Off-Duty Trooper Killed in Bicycle Crash in Onondaga County

(Syracuse, NY – July 3, 2009) – At approximately 8:38am, State Police responded to a Fatal Bicycle accident on State Route 20 just east of Pompey Center Road in the Town of Pompey, Onondaga County.
The investigation revealed that 20 year-old, Charles W. Brewer from 13 East lake Road in Cohocton, New York was westbound on State Route 20 driving a 2007 Chevrolet Impala when he came up behind 47 year-old, John B. Gorke who was riding a bicycle, striking him from behind. 44 year-old, Dave Schnall from Fayetteville, NY was also riding with John and witnessed the accident.
John Gorke sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. He is a 19 year veteran of the New York State Police and was assigned to the Thruway Station in Syracuse. During the summer month’s, John was assigned to the Canal Detail which patrols the various waterways in Central New York. He leaves behind a wife and 3 sons.
The State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating the accident and charges to Brewer may be pending.
State Police were assisted at the scene by the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, the Delphi, Pompey and Manlius Fire Departments along with CAVAC Ambulance.
