Norman, Oklahoma – Applicants Are Being Sought for the Norman Police Academy

In support of the mission to maintain and enhance the quality of life in the City of Norman, the Norman Police Department is seeking community oriented men and women for the 48th Norman Police Academy scheduled to begin July 8, 2010. The department is looking for individuals who are willing to adhere to a high standard of ethics, conduct, and leadership in the community. The testing dates for this upcoming academy are September 18th, 2009 and November 21st, 2009.
Qualified applicants must be at least 21 years of age and have a minimum of 60 college credit hours from an accredited college or university. Thirty (30) college hours will be waived for applicants that have at least three years of active duty military service or two years of prior law enforcement experience with a police department that has 25 or more certified full-time police officers. In addition, applicants must be a legal resident of the United States, have the ability to obtain an Oklahoma Driver’s License, and have no felony convictions.
Applicants must also pass a physical ability test, written examination, extensive background investigation, polygraph, psychological test, and physical examination.
Successful applicants will begin their career as a Norman Police Officer with extensive instruction at the Norman Police Department’s state accredited academy where they will draw full salary and benefits. The 22 week academy training includes classroom instruction and practical field exercises in a number of disciplines to include criminal law, community policing, firearms, and defensive tactics. After graduation, the probationary police officers will undergo a minimum of 18 weeks of on the job training with a Field Training Officer.
The recently approved Public Safety Sales Tax will fund 9 of the positions in the 48th Norman Police Academy.
