Troopers to Increase Presence over Holiday Weekend to Stop Impaired & Aggressive Driving
Waterbury, Vt. — Vermont State Police are reminding motorists to drive carefully over the Independence Day Holiday weekend and throughout the summer season.
Earlier this week state police agencies throughout New England and New York gathered with the New England Patriots organization and other highway safety advocates at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA to promote safe and responsible driving.
The Fourth of July holiday period has had a history of alcohol-related crashes resulting in injury and deaths. “Every motor vehicle crash has the potential to lead to a tragedy and significantly impact the community,” Colonel Thomas L’Esperance said. “Most, if not all of these crashes are preventable”.
Thirty-one persons have died from motor vehicle related crashes so far in 2009 on Vermont roadways. Four of these deaths were occupants on motorcycles.
Through Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort), VSP will focus on identifying impaired and aggressive drivers over the weekend through additional patrols and sobriety checkpoints. Those who drive impaired or aggressively present the highest danger on our highways and have a much greater chance of being involved in a motor vehicle crash.
The Vermont Governor’s Highway Safety Program is also coordinating a DUI task force this weekend. The task force consists of three separate multi-agency law enforcement teams that will operate in Bennington, Franklin and Windsor Counties.
VSP strongly urges our citizens and visitors to focus on safe and responsible driving. If you plan to consume alcoholic beverages, please use available public transportation or a designated driver.
