Highway Patrol: Holiday Enforcement Plans

Those hitting the road for the Fourth of July holiday weekend should remember they’re not alone – the South Dakota Highway Patrol will also be out in force on highways this weekend.

“The Fourth of July holiday has a history of producing increased traffic and alcohol-related crashes,” said Major Randy Hartley, South Dakota Highway Patrol. “We’re taking preventative enforcement measures to remind travelers to make responsible driving decisions and to keep the motoring public safe.”

The Patrol is saturating highly-traveled roads across the state to remind drivers of speed limits and seatbelt use. Additionally, the Patrol is holding 15 sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols during the extended holiday weekend.

“We want to remind people that it’s unacceptable to drink and drive.  It’s your responsibility to abide by the law.  If we catch you driving drunk, we have no choice but to arrest you,” said Hartley.

Over the last five years, the Fourth of July holidays have generated nearly 600 crashes, injuring more than 240 people, and killing 16.

The Patrol reminds travelers to wear their seatbelts, follow the posted speed limits, and always have a sober driver.
