SAVANNAH, GA (July 1, 2009): Savannah-Chatham Metro Police are investigating an earlier shooting leaving one person dead on Savannah’s Eastside.

Just before 3:30 p.m. today Metro Police responded to the area of Sunrise Villa Apartments on a report of a shooting. Officers arrived in front of duplex 38 and found one person suffering from at least one gunshot wound outside the complex. The victim was not responsive and pronounced dead by EMS while on the way to the hospital.

Officers originally thought a second victim on scene had also been shot however it was discovered the second person was suffering from a medical condition and had NOT been shot.

Police are in the early stages of the investigation. Information is vague at this time. Police made contact with several people in and around duplex 38 and have since taken all persons to police headquarters to be questioned. Additionally, police are in the process of making contact with other potential witnesses who were in the general area at the time of the shooting. Multiple shell casings are present on the scene.

At this time, Metro Police Homicide Detectives and Forensic Technicians remain on scene. Due to the number of potential witness Metro Police does plan on staying on scene for the next several hours. To help support police operations and all citizens involved in the incident Metro Police deployed their Mobile Command Post. The Mobile Command Post allows police to have a central location to work from.

No suspect information is known at this time.
