Nebraska State Patrol to Focus on Impaired Drivers over July 4th Holiday Weekend

(Lincoln, NE)- Motorists traveling Nebraska roadways over the long July 4th holiday weekend can expect to see a strong Nebraska State Patrol presence.   The equivalent of 46 extra troopers will be on the road, thanks in part to a nearly $22,000 grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety (NOHS).

Special enforcement efforts will focus on enforcing safe driving practices with an emphasis on removing impaired drivers from our roadways.   Troopers and dispatchers will put in overtime hours beginning in the early afternoon Friday, July 3, 2009 and continuing through the evening hours on Sunday, July 5, 2009.

A vehicle check will be conducted in conjunction with the State Fire Marshal’s Office.  The time and location of the vehicle check should not be released to the public until its completion. On Wednesday, July 1, 2009, from 9:00 am- Noon, a vehicle check will be conducted on Route 136 on the eastside of Auburn, in Nemaha County.   Anyone possessing illegal fireworks will face a $50.00 fine (plus $45.00 court costs).

“Whether you are headed to an area lake or to one of the big celebrations, you can be sure you will be sharing the road with a lot of other travelers,” said Colonel Bryan Tuma, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol.  “Our troopers will be working hard to make sure you reach your destination safely.  You can help them out by wearing your seat belt, obeying the posted speed limit and never driving impaired.”

Motorist assist volunteers in specially marked vans will also be available to help stranded motorists along Interstate 80 from Kearney, Nebraska to Council Bluffs, Iowa.  Travelers are reminded if they experience a roadside emergency or observe an impaired or reckless driver to dial the Nebraska State Patrol Highway Helpline at *55 on any cellular phone or 1-800-525-5555 for emergency assistance.
