Durham, North Carolina – Durham Police Investigate Homicide

Durham police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened Saturday evening on Zelko Court. Officers were dispatched to a shooting call at 5:11 p.m. at #18 Zelko Court. When they arrived, they found Joseph Best, 41, of #18 Zelko Court lying on the steps. He was taken to Duke University Hospital where he died Sunday.
Best’s half-brother, Lewis Scarlette, 56, also of #18 Zelko Court, was arrested at the scene. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and placed in Durham County Jail under a $500,000 bond. The charge against Scarlette will be upgraded to murder.
