DENVER, COLORADO – Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) highway maintenance professionals Richard “Willie” Atencio of San Pablo and Josh Velasquez of Blanca received CDOT Achievement Awards during ceremonies at a meeting of the Colorado Transportation Commission on June 18 in Denver.
They were honored for their efforts to perform the Heimlich Maneuver in order to remove a bite of food that had obstructed the airway of co-worker Dennis Albert of Ft. Garland. The incident occurred on April 8 when all three men were working on a CDOT shouldering project on La Veta Pass, U.S. Hwy. 160 between La Veta and Ft. Garland.
Ron Quintana of Alamosa, all three men’s supervisor and the award nominator, said dislodging the obstruction was not an easy task. “Dennis’ muscles were so tense that it took repeated attempts by both men to clear his airway,” Quintana said. The location of the incident, near the summit of the 9,413 foot pass, meant that emergency medical response might not have been able to arrive at the scene in time to help Albert.
Both Atencio and Velasquez credited the annual first aid/first response training they receive at the CDOT Maintenance Training Academy in Golden for preparing them to recognize the emergency situation quickly and know exactly what to do to help. Atencio is Transportation Maintenance (TM) Worker II for Patrol 1 at Ft. Garland; Albert is TM-I for that same patrol. Velasquez TM-I for Patrol 2 at La Veta Pass.
“Our maintenance professionals are renowned for helping motorists along Colorado’s highways, where they sometimes save lives at accident scenes or in severe weather conditions,” Quintana said. “In this case, they used the training they have received to save the life of their co-worker. Dennis Albert was able to go home that night to his family thanks to the efforts of Willie Atencio and Josh Velasquez.”
