Earlier today, a single vehicle crash claimed the life of a young man from Shreveport, LA, despite witnesses’ efforts.
Troopers responded to the crash around 3:30 pm, which occurred on I-49 approximately 25 miles north of Alexandria. The crash involved a 1998 Ford Explorer, driven by Benjamin P. Michael (W/M 22 yrs). The Ford was south bound on I-49 traveling in the outside lane when Michael switched to the inside lane to pass a vehicle. After passing the vehicle, he reentered the outside lane at which time the right rear tire failed. Michael then lost control and exited the roadway into the median. The vehicle then began overturning, coming to rest on the roof with the vehicle submerged in water with Michael trapped inside of it.
Several witnesses stopped to assist Michael by overturning his vehicle onto the passenger’s side, freed him from the vehicle, and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Michael was transported to Rapides Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
Troop E Troopers have investigated 34 fatal crashes for the year of 2009, resulting in 40 fatalities. Nineteen of the 28 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Two crashes have involved a motorcycle, three have involved a pedestrian, and one has involved an off road vehicle.
