The Aurora Police Department conducted their first Pedestrian Safety Enforcement operation of the spring/summer season. 3 marked units with uniformed Officers and a plain clothes Officer acting as a pedestrian participated in this operation.
The Officers focused on the intersection of Highway 99E and Ottaway Road NE, it is an unmarked crosswalk at a marked intersection that is near one of the city’s bus stops and the Post Office. The Police and City Council have received numerous complaints about pedestrians nearly being hit due to motor vehicles driving too fast and inattentive drivers.
The Officers stopped 45 vehicles during the operation and cited 18 drivers for Failing to Yield to the Pedestrian. Several other citations were also issued including No Insurance, Endangering Child Passenger (No Seatbelt), and Offensive Littering. Many of the drivers stopped said that they did not see the pedestrian, others said they did not know they needed to stop.
Officers were contacted by several residents who were pleased to see that the Officers’ were conducting this operation at such a dangerous intersection.
As a reminder Officers’ will be working this same intersection next Sunday from 12pm-4pm.
