Sobriety Checkpoint
Officers conducted a DUI checkpoint for the Memorial Day holiday weekend from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sunday (5/24/2009) at the intersection of 156th and Little Axe Drive. Officers stopped all motorists traveling north and south bound on NE 156th, evaluating a total of 653 vehicles. Charges filed as a result of the checkpoint were;
Charges:
1 Driving Under the influence (DUI)
1 Driving Under Revocation
Officers working on the checkpoint were working extra duty with funding coming from the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office and the 2M2L grant. The Norman Police Department is aware of the importance of keeping intoxicated drivers off the roadways this holiday weekend. Norman officers sacrificed their personal holiday plans with their families and decided to work extra duty to reduce the number of intoxicated drivers and ensure safe roadways for the community.
While conducting the checkpoint officers received several positive comments from motorist passing through. “We are very appreciative of the support shown by the citizens of Norman. Although thanks are not expected, because we are doing our job, it is always nice to have the acknowledgement from the people we serve that they are happy with what we are doing”.
