News Release, 09-026, Operation Spring Cleaning

“Operation Spring Cleaning”

Operation Spring Cleaning has reached the half way point. The operation is a joint effort between law enforcement agencies from the State of Ohio, Summit County and the City of Akron Services Division. The goal of the operation is to improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods and make the City of Akron a safer place to live, work, and play.

Some of the activities and enforcement that have taken place during the operation are:

Warrant Sweeps conducted by the Akron Police Department, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office and the US Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force. The detail has actively pursued those individuals with outstanding warrants in the City of Akron. A total of 458 individuals have been arrested on a total 803 outstanding warrants during the month of April.

“Gun Violence Reduction Sweeps” conducted by the Akron Police Department, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office and the US Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force. The sweeps were conducted on April 09th and 13th. The operation arrested a total of 35 individuals resulting in 73 charges. Of those charges: 27 were felony arrests, 25 were misdemeanor arrests, and 21 were warrant arrests. The detail seized 10 grams of Crack Cocaine, over 30 grams of Marijuana, 4 Valium Pills, and a loaded .25 cal. handgun and over $400.00 in cash. The detail also wrote 24 traffic citations. A number of the individuals arrested were street level dealers who hang out on the corners and intimidate our residents.

Sex Offender Sweeps were conducted by the Summit County Sex Offender Unit during the days of April 21st – 23rd. The verification team checked the addresses of Tier 1 offenders; 399 adults and 20 juveniles and 27 offenders were verified prior to the sweep. Of those checks, 28 offenders (6.7%) were found to be non-compliant. The Summit County Sex Offenders Unit is conducting further investigations to locate and arrest non-compliant offenders.

Four-Day Public Safety Blitz was conducted by officers from the Akron Police Department, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, the US Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force, ATF and the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The blitz was conducted April 22nd – 25th. Two search warrants were served during the blitz; one in the 1000 block of Delia Ave for drug trafficking and the other at the Playhouse Bar located at 1700 E. Waterloo Rd for Prohibited Acts in a Sexually Oriented Business. A 14-year-old female was found dancing topless during the execution of the search warrant. A total of 235 individuals were arrested during the four-day blitz resulting in 432 criminal charges. Those charges include felony, misdemeanor and warrant arrests. 279 traffic citations were issued and 29 individuals were arrested for Operating a Vehicle under the Influence (OVI). The detail seized Marijuana, Crack Cocaine, Ecstasy, 2 loaded guns, and over $800.00 in cash.

Commercial Vehicle Enforcement conducted by the Akron Police Department Traffic Division was conducted April 20th – 24th. A total of 23 vehicles were stopped for enforcement action. Of those vehicles stopped, 17 vehicles were weighed. A total of 42 citations were issued: 11 overloaded, 9 unsafe, and 22 other minor traffic violations.

University of Akron Strict Enforcement Details have been conducted by the Akron Police Department and the University of Akron Police Department. The detail focused in the area primarily south of E. Exchange St in off-campus student housing. The detail was conducted on April 18th –19th and 24th – 25th in which 46 individuals were arrested on a total of 135 charges. The charges range from minor alcohol and drug offenses to disorderly offenses.
Quality of Life Issues have been conducted and enforced since the start of the operation by the City of Akron Service Department, the Akron Police Department, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office and the University of Akron Police Department. The Service Department received 113 referrals for quality of life issues in Akron neighborhoods. They include 31 graffiti complaints, 18 junk vehicle complaints, 13 street sign complaints, 11 pit bull violations, and 41 individuals were summonsed under the Loud Music Ordinance.

Public Awareness and Community Relations Campaigns

The Akron Police Department Community Relations Division kicked off the month with a Public Safety Meeting at the Kenmore Senior Community Center on April 03rd. The topics discussed were personal safety, home security techniques, vehicle safety and shopping safety. The unit continued throughout the month with talks at several schools in the Akron with topics geared toward children and young adults. Some of the programs discussed were Making Good Decision: Building Character and Drug Resistance, Drug and Alcohol Awareness, You and the Law and a Career Exploration Fair conducted at Buchtel High School. The Akron Police Department Planning and Research Division has updated the Akron Police Department website with the Operation Spring Cleaning logo and several hotline phone numbers. Flyers were made with the hotline numbers and other referral numbers. The flyers were distributed at several ward and block watch meetings throughout the city.

The law enforcement partners appreciate the number of citizens who have assisted by providing information and showing support for these initiatives. Our results are truly a collaborative effort.

Major Incidents Reported for May 01, 2009
One-year-old falls from second story window:

Officers and paramedics responded to Whittier Ave for a one-year-old female that fell out of a second story window last night. The child’s mother reported that she was moving furniture from the house around 6:00 PM, when she put her one-year-old daughter with four other children in a bedroom on the second floor. The other children told responding officers that they stood on the bed and removed the window screen. The one-year-old climbed up on the bed and out the window, falling onto the sidewalk below.

The mother then reported that she heard the child screaming. She immediately ran to the aid of the child and called paramedics. The child was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital, where her injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

Felony reports for May 1, 2009
Susan McCormick, 43, 945 Garfield St., Akron, Ohio was charged with Felonious Assault and Tampering with Evidence. Susan and the victim got into an argument. The victim hit Susan in the face and then Susan stabbed the victim in the side. Susan then cleaned up the crime scene and threw the evidence in a dumpster at the rear of the parking lot.

Thomas J. Parlette, 33, 2334 Nicholas Ave., Akron, Ohio was charged with Felonious Assault, Felonious Assault against a Police Officer and Escape. Thomas was at 2955 Shelburn Ave and got into a confrontation with two victims. Thomas stabbed both victims numerous times with a knife. Brea A. Davis then took Thomas to 152 Fremont Ave and told him to hid in the basement. When the police arrived, Brea lied to the officers about where Thomas was located. Thomas was apprehended by officers and broke free and attempted to run. Thomas bit and officer during his capture.
