On Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at approximately 8:06 p.m., Troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Lee responded to a two-vehicle head-on crash on Route 8 near Tucker’s Tavern in Sandisfield that resulted in one fatality and one serious injury.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper James Somerville indicates that 29-year-old Erin E. Dufour of Chicopee was operating a 2008 Honda Hatchback on Route 8 North near Tucker’s Tavern when she was struck head-on by 47-year-old Pamela Balsamo of Barkhamsted, CT operating a 2002 Mercedes sedan south in the northbound lane. Dufour suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash and was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene by the Medical Examiner. Balsamo was transported by ambulance with serious injuries to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, CT. All lanes of Route 8 were closed for approximately 1 ½ hours for the crash investigation and vehicle removal.
This crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Sandisfield Police Department, Sandisfield Fire Department & EMS, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner assisted Troopers at the scene.
No further information is available at this time. Please do not call the barracks directly.
