Modesto, CA – A Modesto Police officer shot and killed a sword-wielding man in downtown Modesto early Sunday morning. The officer was uninjured during the incident.

At about 5:00 AM a Modesto Fire Department battalion chief was at the Double Tree hotel on an unrelated call when he saw a suspicious man on “K” Street in front of the hotel. He noticed that the man was carrying an object; possibly a large knife or sword. Modesto Police were dispatched to investigate.

Officer Latisha Leap was the first arriving officer and she encountered the man on “K” Street between 9th and 10th Streets. The officer shot the suspect during the encounter. The suspect has been identified as Modesto resident Richard Phillip Robles (DOB 01/09/64). Robles was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. It is believed that Robles was armed with a two to three foot long sword when confronted by Officer Leap.

Modesto Police detectives, along with personnel from the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office, are investigating the incident. Officer Leap, a three year veteran of the Modesto Police Department, has been placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated. Both are standard procedure in officer involved shooting incidents. The Modesto Police Department will not be providing further details during this on-going investigation.
