2009 – New Driving Laws Focus on DUI & Ignition Interlock Devices

Alaska, California, Illinois, Nebraska and Washington State are among the states that have new DUI legislation regarding Ignition Interlock Devices and Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Devices (Illinois). Some of these new driving laws were enacted in 2008 and became effective on January 1st, 2009.

Alaska – House Bill 19 became effective on 1/1/09.  This bill allows some DUI offenders (Misdemeanor Only) eligible to receive an ignition interlock limited license after the first 30 days of their license suspension.

California - California has 3 new laws on the books regarding Ignition Interlock Devices. One of the new laws is not effective until July, 2009. Another new California Driving Law, Assembly Bill 2802, deals with DUI reckless driving. For more information and links to these bills please visit the Updated Driving Laws Page.

Colorado – Has a new law that deals with DUI and Test Refusal Penalties. The new law (House Bill 1166) Authorizes the Colorado department of revenue  to revoke a person’s driver license for a DUI Test Refusal. Illinois – Senate Bill 300 allows eligible DUI violators to drive during suspension if their vehicle is equipped with a Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device or BAIID. For more information on the New Illinois Driving Law please see our Updated 2009 driving laws Page.

Nebraska - Nebraska’s Legislative Bill 736 requires the installation of an Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device for a first and 2nd DUI Conviction. Please see our UPDATE Page.

South Carolina - South Carolina had two bills enacted in 2008. Those were House Bill 3496 which deals with a refusal  to submit to a chemical test and Senate Bill 472 that involves a DUI offender and his ability to drive only a vehicle registered  in his name that is equipped with an Ignition Interlock Device installed.
