Clallam County – Rising flood waters of the Pysht and Hoko rivers in Clallam County have left motorists seeking alternative routes, as well as stranding drivers and two Washington State Patrol troopers.

Last night at approximately 10:00 pm, Troopers Travis Beebe and Michael Simonson responded to a stranded motorist on State Route 112 near milepost 25, 45 miles west of Port Angeles. The motorist was stranded in approximately 2-3 feet of water which was very swift in areas. A passerby with a large 4 wheel drive truck offered assistance, and Trooper Beebe waded out into the waist deep water, hooking a tow strap to the stranded motorist’s vehicle. The vehicle was then pulled to safety and removed by a local tow company.

As troopers tried to leave the area, they realized that flood waters had covered the roadway and they were unable to get out. The two troopers are stuck in an approximate ½ mile section as they wait for assistance. They reported the flooded area to cover approximately 1 mile of roadway, with very swift moving water in spots, approximately 3 feet deep. Troopers report heavy rain coming down in the area, causing flood waters to continually rise.

“The safety of our personnel is our number one priority” said Lieutenant Clint Casebolt, “We have been monitoring the situation overnight and are currently working with WSDOT to ensure the troopers involved are safely removed from the area.”

Other road closures have been reported on SR112 near the town of Joyce and on SR110 near Ballard Road. Drivers can get real time traffic and weather information by dialing 5-1-1 from most phones, or by visiting www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic. TTY users can call 800-833-6388.

Update 10:15 am: Troopers were retrieved by WSDOT and their patrol vehicles were secured at a local residence.
