DUI Checkpoints & Crime on the Road, Sobriety Checkpoints

On January 2, 2009 at approximately 11:00 p.m., Santa Cruz Police officers responded to a stabbing on the corner of Soquel Avenue and Frederick Street. According to witnesses, the suspects and the victim engaged in a verbal argument, exchanging gang slurs, on a Santa Cruz County Metro bus immediately proceeding the stabbing.

The victim and the suspects exited the bus and soon after the verbal argument escalated into a physical fight. According to emergency medical personnel, the victim was stabbed repeatedly in the torso area. The suspects fled the scene toward Capitola Road.

The Santa Cruz Police Department, Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol established a perimeter between Morrissey Blvd. and Capitola Road including the Arana Gulch area. A Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office Sergeant located an individual matching the description of one of the suspects near Capitola Road and Soquel Avenue.

The detained juvenile suspect was positively identified by a witness as involved in the altercation. Utilizing the Santa Cruz Police Department K-9 officers canvassed the neighborhood for the one remaining suspect, but he was not located.

Investigators are still following leads to identify the outstanding suspect (description above). The motive for the attack appears to be solely gang-related. After receiving treatment at the scene, the victim was transported to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
