Driving Laws, DUI and Crime on the Road

On November 18th at approximately 4:31 P.M. the Vermont State Police Derby Barracks received a report of a hunter who had been shot while hunting near Alderbrook Road, located off of VT Route 105 in Coventry, VT.  The victim, Theron Willard, was seated on a game chair in a field when he was shot by another hunter, James Rowell.  Mr. Rowell stated he was hunting on a knoll close to a field when reported he saw a group of deer. 

Mr. Rowell reported that he raised his hunting rifle and attempted to shoot what he thought was a buck.  After the shot, Mr. Rowell heard screaming and he ran to that location and realized he had shot another hunter, Mr. Willard.  Mr. Rowell went to Mr. Willard’s aid and rendered assistance.  Rescue personnel were notified of the shooting and responded.  Mr. Willard was transported to North County Hospital in Newport for treatment of a gunshot wound to his lower extremities.  He was subsequently transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center where he is listed in stable condition.  
 
This investigation is being conducted jointly between the Vermont State Police and Game Wardens from the Department of Fish and Wildlife.  Mr. Rowell was charged with Reckless Endangerment and is scheduled to appear in Orleans County District Court on December 2nd.
