AMES, Iowa – Nov. 17, 2008 – According to the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT), a new law taking effective Jan. 1, 2009, will be bringing changes to the fees some Iowans pay to register and title their vehicles and trailers.
“Generally speaking, if your car, pickup truck or sport utility vehicle was titled and registered in Iowa prior to Jan. 1, 2009, your vehicle’s registration fee will not increase.” said Tina Hargis, director of the Iowa DOT’s Office of Vehicle Services.
Changes in the law are complex and vary according to when a vehicle was titled and registered, a vehicle’s age and registration due date, type of vehicle, and whether a vehicle’s tonnage or usage is changed after Jan. 1, 2009.
To answer some of the questions commonly being asked about the new law, the Iowa DOT (in partnership with the county treasurer offices) has published a Frequently Asked Questions section on the DOT’s Web site. Visit http://www.iowadot.gov/ and look for the link under the “Hot Topics” section.
Public inquiries regarding these changes should be directed to the Iowa DOT’s Office of Vehicle Services at 515-237-3110 or vehser@dot.state.ia.us.
