AMES, Iowa – Nov. 17, 2008 — What’s got traffic tied up? It could be a flooded roadway, traffic crash, disabled vehicle or one of dozens of other traffic-related incidents that happen every day on our roadways. Now, you can be in the know at the same time that the Iowa Department of Transportation’s (DOT) operations staff is responding to those incidents.
A new “Traffic Incident” Web site - accessible from the Iowa DOT’s home page -http://www.iowadot.gov/ - is being offered to keep the traveling public and media informed about situations impacting traffic flow.
The site offers information about incidents that:
§ Occur on highways maintained by the Iowa DOT – interstate, U.S. or “Iowa” roadways.
§ Happen any time of the day or week.
§ Restrict or impair traffic movement.
§ Take place anywhere in Iowa.
The Iowa DOT’s new Web site even allows subscribers to receive the latest traffic incident postings automatically via their E-mail accounts or through an RSS feed. Visit the new Web site to sign up.
The new traffic incident notices are being issued by personnel staffing the Iowa DOT’s 24/7 operational support unit, which performs a variety of critical tasks for the department, including coordination with law enforcement and emergency responders, traffic monitoring, activation of dynamic message signs (for incidents and Amber alerts), and emergency response coordination with Iowa Homeland Security and other state and federal agencies, etc.
This new public service complements the Iowa DOT’s other traveler informational tools, including the department’s news releases, 511 phone service (call 511) and Web site (http://www.511ia.org/), dynamic message signs, traffic cameras, highway advisory radios, and road weather information system (http://www.dotweatherview.com/).
