Pedestrian Killed In Crash/Alcohol Suspected As A Factor

On Saturday, November 15, 2008, at 4:00 am, Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a fatal crash involving one pedestrian and one vehicle.  The crash occurred on Hawks Road, west of US Hwy 171, in Vernon Parish.

The crash involved a 1995 Lincoln Town Car, driven by Mr. Jered A. Williams (W/M 18 yrs) of Evans, LA and a pedestrian, identified as Mr. James Earl Knight Jr. (W/M 26 yrs) of DeRidder, LA.  The Lincoln was west bound on Hawks Road when it collided with Mr. Knight Jr.  He was reportedly lying down in the roadway (west bound lane) at the time of the collision.

Alcohol usage is suspected as a factor on the part of Mr. Knight Jr.  He was pronounced dead.

Mr. Williams was not injured in the crash.

Routine toxicology tests are pending.

Vernon Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an investigation to determine the exact cause of death.

The crash remains under investigation.

Troop E Troopers have investigated 57 fatal crashes for the year of 2008, resulting in 64 fatalities.  Ten of the 57 fatal crashes have involved pedestrians.  Five fatal crashes have involved an ATV and five have involved a motorcycle.    Thirty of the 37 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants.  Nine fatal victims were restrained.
