On October 11, 2008, at approximately 2:30 A.M. Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a reported loud party in the 100 block of Vista Mesa Drive in the Village of Oak Creek. Upon arrival, deputies found at least 50 persons, mostly under the age of 21, consuming alcohol in and around a barn on the property. Deputies have been at the location on numerous previous calls regarding similar activity.

When it became known deputies were on the property, many of the party goers began running. About 30 were eventually detained as additional deputies arrived, many of whom were found hiding under cars and in fields adjacent to the property. Deputies checked the barn and found it was constructed in two levels with a deck off the back room and a makeshift bar at one end of the main room. Deputies searched the barn and found additional underage persons in the proximity of alcoholic beverages and attempting to avoid detection. A large quantity of various alcoholic beverages was found throughout the barn and adjacent exterior area.

Deputies went to the main home and after several attempts, convinced the property owner, 57-year-old Douglas West, to exit his home. When deputies questioned West about the widespread underage drinking on his property, he claimed no knowledge of the activity, but did not appear surprised by the amount of vehicles and party goers throughout his place. While speaking with West, deputies saw a male run from the home’s front door into a field. Deputies checked the home and discovered several additional persons under 21 inside with access to liquor. After completing the investigation, West was arrested, transported to and booked at the Camp Verde Detention Center for 12 counts of Furnishing Liquor to Underage Persons and one count of Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor.

Three additional males were arrested for underage drinking and booked at the Camp Verde Detention Center. They include 19- year-old Danny Wyatt, 20-year-old Calvin Carberry, and 18-year-old Robert Helmkamp.

All are Sedona residents. The remainder of those detained were identified and released due to lack of evidence related to intoxication or possession. West has been released pending a November court date in the Verde Valley Justice Court. (This media release was delayed as the investigation continued and reports were not completed until days after the incident).
