A former football coach at North Bend High School died Friday night and the school’s athletic director was injured in a two vehicle crash on Highway 138W about ten miles west of Sutherlin.
According to Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Mark Moore, on October 3, 2008 at approximately 5:45 p.m. a 1999 Cadillac Seville four-door driven by HOWARD JOHNSON, age 72, from North Bend, was eastbound on Highway 138W near milepost 14 negotiating a sharp right curve when a westbound 2005 Jeep Wrangler two-door lost control and began to slide into the eastbound lane. The Cadillac maneuvered toward the right side of the highway in an attempt to avoid the Jeep, but it was struck in the driver’s side by the left front corner of the Jeep.
The Cadillac came to rest off the right side of the highway in a wide turnout area. JOHNSON was pronounced deceased at the scene. His passenger, BOYD BJORKQUIST, age 53, from North Bend, received minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center where he was treated and released. Both were using safety restraints and the car’s airbags deployed. BJORKQUIST is North Bend High School’s athletic director. They were reportedly enroute to Sutherlin for the school’s football game.
The Jeep came to rest in the westbound lane. Driver, JENNIFER NOEL SINES, age 33, from Roseburg, and her two-year old son received non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Mercy Medical Center by ambulance. The two-year old boy has been transferred by air ambulance to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland for further medical treatment. The driver was using safety restraints and the child was in a child safety seat. The Jeep’s airbags deployed.
Oregon State Police troopers from the Roseburg Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Roadway conditions at the time were wet.
Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Kellogg Rescue & Fire Department, Sutherlin Ambulance, and ODOT assisted at the scene.
Highway 138W was closed about 3 1/2 hours.
