Poultney, Vermont - Man Stabbed in Altercation

On 10.03.08, at approximately 2200 hours, State Troopers, Police Officers from Fair Haven and Castleton, and the Poultney Constable were dispatched to a reported stabbing that had occurred in front of 41 Broughton Avenue in Poultney.
Investigation revealed that Brian Smith and his estranged wife, Serena Smith were engaged in a physical altercation at this residence. Brian Smith was uninvited on this premises. This altercation then spilled into the roadway, where Serena claims she was dragged by Smith.
Serena’s fiancé’, Herman Hier, who resides at the residence with Serena, came to Serena’s aid and became involved in an verbal altercation with Brian Smith. Serena advised that during this scuffle, she was hit in the head with an object, which she initially thought was a knife, by Brian Smith. Hier and Smith then started arguing more, with Serena in the middle.
Hier told officers that he was placed in a headlock by Smith and this caused him to stab Smith in the leg. This leg wound was very serious and Smith was transported to the Rutland Regional Medical Center where he is currently listed in stable condition.
This incident is currently under investigation.
