Troops to Conduct Sobriety Checkpoints Each Weekend for a Year
HARRISBURG: (Oct. 2, 2008) – The Pennsylvania State Police will begin a yearlong program this weekend aimed at taking intoxicated motorists off the road, Acting Commissioner Frank E. Pawlowski announced today.
“The Pennsylvania State Police Checkpoint Strikeforce Initiative is designed to reduce crashes, prevent injuries and save lives by identifying and arresting those who drive under the influence,” Pawlowski said. “This will be a major effort involving troopers across the state.”
Under the initiative, each of the 15 regional state police troops will conduct a random sobriety checkpoint within its troop area every weekend for the next year. In the event of inclement weather, a troop may conduct roving DUI patrols rather than a checkpoint.
“The troops also will promote anti-DUI enforcement activities with municipal police departments,” Pawlowski said. “Working with our municipal police partners is the best way to maximize our resources and get the best results.”
He said the checkpoint locations will be determined by commanders based on up-to-date crash data collected by the department’s PROphecy computer system and other sources.
“We will focus our attention on areas that have experienced a high number of DUI-related crashes,” said Pawlowski, who noted that alcohol-related crashes in Pennsylvania claimed 525 lives last year.
The enforcement effort will be supported by federal funding obtained through PennDOT.
